How to rank in ChatGPT

ChatGPT has no fixed rankings. It writes a new answer each time and names the businesses it can find clear, specific pages about. To get named, publish pages that answer buyer questions directly (comparisons, alternatives, pricing, how-tos), let ChatGPT's crawler read your site, get listed on the review sites and lists it already cites, and re-check the answers every week.

  1. 01

Find the questions you should appear for

List the prompts a buyer types before choosing something like you: "best [category] for [use case]", "[competitor] alternatives", "[competitor] vs [competitor]", "how to [job you solve]". Ask each in ChatGPT with search on and note who gets named and which pages are cited. The questions where competitors appear and you don't are where to start.

  2. 02

    Let ChatGPT read your site

ChatGPT search reads the web through OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Check your robots.txt doesn't block it, and that your key pages are indexed in Google and Bing. Serve your main text in the page's HTML rather than loading it only through scripts, and keep important pages out from behind logins and pop-ups. A page a crawler can't read can't be cited.

  3. 03

    Publish one page per question

Write a page for each question you want to be named for, and answer it in the first two sentences. Use the formats assistants cite most: "best X for Y" lists, X vs Y comparisons, alternatives pages, pricing pages and plain how-tos. Include specifics a model can quote: prices, limits, who it's for and who it isn't for. Vague feature pages rarely get cited.

  4. 04

Get mentioned where ChatGPT already looks

Check which pages ChatGPT cites for your target questions. They are often review sites, directories, "best of" articles and forum threads. Claim your listings, ask happy customers for reviews on the sites that appear, and give the authors of lists that leave you out a clear reason to include you. A mention on a page ChatGPT already uses can move the answer fastest.

  5. 05

    Keep your facts consistent everywhere

Use the same company name, category description and pricing on your site, your listings and your social profiles. Conflicting descriptions make it likelier that an assistant describes you wrongly or skips you. Add structured data such as Organization, Product and FAQ schema so the facts are machine-readable, and update pages with dates or prices as soon as they change.

  6. 06

    Measure every week, then repeat

Re-ask your prompt set each week and record whether you were named, in what position and which page was cited. Expect weeks between publishing a page and being cited. When a competitor overtakes you on a question, write the better page. Revnu checks these questions every day across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity and drafts the next page when you slip, for your approval.

Prompts to track if you want to rank in ChatGPT

Shortlist prompts

The answers to these decide which names a buyer researches next. Best [category] for [type of company] Top [category] for [use case] in [year] What [category] do [job title]s use? Most recommended [category] for a [size] team If you are missing here, the fix is usually a "best [category] for [use case]" page and a place on the lists ChatGPT cites.

Comparison and alternative prompts

Asked near the moment of purchase. One honest comparison page per pair is usually the fastest win. [Competitor] alternatives [Competitor] vs [competitor] for [use case] Is [competitor] worth it? Cheaper option than [competitor] for [type of company] Write each one fairly; pages that admit where a rival is stronger read as more credible.

Job-to-be-done prompts

For buyers who know the problem but not the category. A plain how-to page that solves the job, and shows where you fit, is what gets cited. How do I [job you solve]? How to [outcome] without [pain] What's the easiest way to [task] for a small team? How do [type of company] handle [problem]?

Buyer-fit prompts

Specific constraints narrow the answer to a few names. Pages that state clearly who you are for win these. [Category] that works with [tool they already use] [Category] for a team without [skill or role] [Category] under $[budget] a month [Category] that supports [requirement, such as SOC 2 or a language]

How to log each check

For every prompt, record: Date and assistant Exact prompt, with web search on Named? yes or no Position in the answer How you were described: accurate, outdated or wrong Competitors named Cited URLs Run the same prompt on a second day before drawing any conclusion from it.

Why Revnu for ranking in ChatGPT

ChatGPT recommends the businesses it can find clear, specific pages about. Revnu works out which questions your buyers ask, checks who gets named today, and publishes the pages that put you in the answer.

  1. 1Lists the questions buyers ask ChatGPT about your category.
  2. 2Checks who gets named for each, and which pages are cited.
  3. 3Writes the missing pages, publishes them and tracks whether you start getting named.

What ChatGPT actually cites

When ChatGPT searches the web, it leans on pages that answer one question well: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "X alternatives", pricing pages and plain explanations. Thin homepages and vague feature lists rarely get cited.

Why it is ongoing work

Competitors publish too, and answers drift. Revnu keeps checking the questions that matter to you and writes the next page when you slip, so ranking in ChatGPT is something it maintains rather than a one-off project.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as SEO?

It overlaps. The pages that rank on Google are often the pages ChatGPT cites. Revnu writes for both and measures both.

Is SEO still worth it if people ask ChatGPT instead of Google?

Yes. When ChatGPT searches the web, it relies on pages that are indexed and well regarded by search engines, so the pages that rank on Google are often the ones it cites. SEO is part of ranking in ChatGPT, not an alternative to it. What changes is the format: pages that answer one question clearly and specifically get quoted.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timeline. A new page has to be crawled and indexed before ChatGPT search can cite it, which usually takes days to weeks, and being named consistently can take longer. Answers ChatGPT gives without searching come from its training data and update far more slowly. Measure weekly and judge results over a month or more.

What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?

It's the Pareto idea applied to search: a small share of your pages and keywords brings most of your traffic and sign-ups. In practice, find the handful of questions closest to a purchase and get those pages right before writing anything else. The same holds for ChatGPT: a few buyer questions matter far more than the rest.

Why does ChatGPT describe my company wrongly?

It is working from what it found: old pages, outdated listings or someone else's comparison. Nobody can edit an answer directly. Publish an accurate, current page about what you do, who it's for and what it costs, fix outdated listings, and track whether the answer changes as those pages get read.

Is this free?

You start with a free trial. Revnu asks for a card when you sign up and starts on what you typed straight away. After the trial, plans start at $99 a month. Cancel any time in Settings.

Does anything run before I sign up?

No. Nothing is checked or generated on this page. Revnu does the work inside your account, where it can read your website, keep what it finds and carry on from there.
