How to get bookkeeping clients

To get bookkeeping clients, pick a niche you understand, then work the channels where owners already look for help: referrals from CPAs and past clients, a Google Business Profile with reviews, and a page for each niche you serve. Add direct outreach to new and growing businesses in that niche, and time a push for January through April, when tax deadlines expose messy books.

  1. 01

Pick a niche you can describe in one line

Choose one or two industries where you already know the software, the chart of accounts and the common mistakes: restaurants, contractors, e-commerce stores, dental practices, property investors. Write one sentence an owner would recognize, such as "Monthly books for restaurants on QuickBooks, closed by the 15th." A niche makes every later step easier, because you know where those owners gather, what to say to them and which accountants serve them.

  2. 02

Partner with CPAs and tax preparers

Many CPA firms prepare returns but don't want monthly bookkeeping, and they lose hours every spring cleaning up client books. List 20 to 30 firms in your area or niche and offer to take the monthly work off their hands. Keep it simple: one short email, a clear handoff process and a promise of reconciled books before their deadlines. One good CPA relationship can send you clients for years.

  3. 03

Get found in local and niche search

Claim your Google Business Profile, choose "Bookkeeping service" as the category, set your service area and ask every happy client for a review. Then build one page per niche or city, such as "Bookkeeping for contractors in Denver", listing what you do, the software you use and how onboarding works. Also list yourself in the advisor directory of the software you use, such as QuickBooks or Xero.

  4. 04

    Reach new and growing businesses

New businesses need a bookkeeper before their first tax season, and some states let you search or download recent business filings. Growing businesses are a second target: a second location, new hires or a bigger payroll usually means the owner can't keep the books at night anymore. Send a short email about the problem that kind of change brings, and ask one question about how their books are handled today.

  5. 05

Time your push around tax season

Owners feel the pain of messy books between January and April, when their accountant asks for year-end numbers. Plan cleanup and catch-up offers for that window, then follow up in May with a monthly service so the mess doesn't come back. In the fall, reach owners before year-end, when they are planning for next year and open to setting things up properly.

  6. 06

Turn every cleanup into a referral

A cleanup job is your best chance to show your work. Finish it with a short written summary of what you fixed, propose a monthly plan, and ask for a review and an introduction to one other owner. Track where every client came from in a simple sheet, and give more of your time to the two channels that bring in the most signed clients.

Bookkeeping outreach you can adapt

Email to a CPA firm

Subject: Monthly books for your [niche] clients Hi [first name], I run a bookkeeping practice for [niche] businesses in [city], working in [QuickBooks / Xero]. A lot of firms I talk to prepare the returns but would rather not do monthly books, then spend March cleaning them up. If that sounds familiar, I'd be glad to take the monthly work and hand you reconciled books well before your deadlines. Would a 15-minute call next week make sense? [Your name]

Email to a growing business owner

Subject: Books for the second [location / store] Hi [first name], A second location or a few new hires is usually when the books stop fitting into evenings. I keep monthly books for [number] [niche] businesses in [city], closed by the [day] of each month, so owners know their numbers before the next big decision. How are your books handled today? [Your name]

Google search ad for a niche

Headline 1: Bookkeeping for [Niche] Headline 2: Books Closed by the [Day] Headline 3: [QuickBooks / Xero] ProAdvisor Description: Catch-up, cleanup and monthly bookkeeping for [niche] owners in [city]. Clean books before your CPA asks for them. Book a call. Keep each headline under 30 characters, and bid on searches like "bookkeeper for [niche]" and "bookkeeping services [city]".

Why Revnu for getting bookkeeping clients

Most bookkeepers grow through referrals, local search and a niche they know well. Revnu takes the part that eats your evenings: it finds businesses in your niche that need their books handled, writes to the owner in your voice and publishes the pages that bring in searches.

  1. 1Reads your website to learn your services, your niche and the software you work in.
  2. 2Finds businesses in that niche and the owner or finance lead at each, with a reason to write now, such as a new location or a hiring push.
  3. 3Writes to each one in your voice, sends once you approve, and drafts your replies so interested owners get your booking link.

Referrals still come first

Your best source is usually other professionals: CPAs who don't want monthly books, and tax preparers whose clients arrive in March with a year of receipts. Revnu finds the accounting firms in your area or niche and writes the partnership email, so your time goes on the conversations.

Outreach that sounds like a bookkeeper

Owners ignore emails that read like software pitches. Revnu writes short notes about the bookkeeping problem a growing business runs into, and asks one easy question about how their books are kept today.

Frequently asked questions

Does it send emails without asking me?

No. By default every email waits for your approval. You can turn on auto-send later, once you've approved enough of its drafts with few changes. Replies to prospects always wait for you.

What happens when an owner replies?

Revnu reads the reply and drafts a response. When the owner wants to talk, it sends your booking link so the call lands on your calendar. You approve each reply before it goes.

How do bookkeepers get their first client?

Most first clients come from people you already know: former employers, friends who run businesses and local accountants with more monthly work than they want. Tell your network exactly who you serve, offer a fixed-scope cleanup as a first project, and once the books are clean, ask that client for a review and an introduction to another owner.

Where do bookkeepers find clients online?

Google search and Maps, through a Google Business Profile with reviews; the advisor directories of QuickBooks and Xero; LinkedIn, where owners and CPAs are easy to find; and local business groups on Facebook where owners ask money questions. In those groups, answer questions properly rather than posting offers, and people will ask to work with you.

When is the best time to market bookkeeping services?

Late fall through April. Before year-end, owners plan for the new year and are open to setting up their books properly. From January to April, tax deadlines expose messy books and owners look for cleanup help. Follow up in May with a monthly plan so cleanup clients stay on.

Can Revnu run my outreach to accounting firms?

Yes. Tell it the kind of firm and the area, and Revnu finds the firms and the partner or owner at each, writes the email in your voice and sends it once you approve. It drafts your replies too, and those wait for you.

Is this free?

You start with a free trial. Revnu asks for a card when you sign up and starts on what you typed straight away. After the trial, plans start at $99 a month. Cancel any time in Settings.

Does anything run before I sign up?

No. Nothing is checked or generated on this page. Revnu does the work inside your account, where it can read your website, keep what it finds and carry on from there.
