Best AI Visibility Tools in 2026: 8 AEO Tools Compared Honestly

By George Jefferson · October 10, 2026 · 9 min read

A flat illustration of a lighthouse whose single beam sweeps across an empty field and lands on the Revnu clover, the only thing lit.

A founder we spoke to tried four AI visibility tools in one week, all on free trials, all pointed at the same brand. The first said her visibility was 22%. The second said 31%. The third said 18%, and the fourth, which only tracked ChatGPT, said 40%. She spent a morning trying to work out which one was right before realizing they were all right. Each tool asked different questions, on different engines, in different ways, and counted the answers differently. The one thing all four agreed on was the part she had skipped: the same three comparison articles were cited in nearly every answer, and she was in none of them.

That is the most useful thing to know before you pick an AI visibility tool. The score is a property of the tool as much as of your brand. What carries across all of them is the list of pages the answers lean on, and whether anyone is going to act on it. Here are the eight tools worth considering in 2026, with prices from each vendor's own page and an honest limit for each.

What AI visibility tools actually do

Strip away the branding and every tool in this category does the same core job. It keeps a list of prompts (questions a buyer in your market might ask), runs them against AI assistants on a schedule, and parses each answer for four things: were you mentioned, in what position, in what tone, and which URLs did the answer cite. Repeat that daily across engines and competitors and you get the familiar outputs: a visibility percentage, share of voice, sentiment, and a ranked list of cited sources.

You will see the category under several names. Answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), AI search optimization and AI visibility all describe the same thing: getting your brand named and cited when buyers ask an assistant instead of a search box. The best AEO tools and the best AI visibility tools are the same list.

Where tools actually differ:

  • Collection method. Some query the models through their APIs; others scrape the logged-out consumer interfaces, which is closer to what a real person sees. Neither is wrong, but the numbers will not match.

  • Prompt set. Your score depends heavily on which questions are asked. Fifty well-chosen prompts beat 500 vague ones.

  • Engines and regions. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot behave differently, and many plans cap how many you can track.

  • What happens next. Most tools stop at measurement and recommendations. A few help draft or optimize. Very few publish anything.

The last point matters most. Assistants assemble their answers from sources: your site, review sites, listicles, forum threads and comparison pages. A tool that tells you which four articles are carrying your category is useful. The answer only changes when someone writes the missing pages and gets you onto those sources. How to get recommended by ChatGPT covers that work step by step.

What to look for

  1. The engines your buyers actually use, on the plan you can afford.

  2. Citation and source data, because that is the actionable part.

  3. Enough prompts to trust a trend. Under about 50, read direction, not exact scores.

  4. Self-serve or sales-led. Whether you can start this week with a card.

  5. Who does the work after the dashboard. Your team, an agency, or the product itself.

The 8 best AI visibility tools in 2026

1. Revnu

Revnu is a different kind of thing from the rest of this list. It is not a dashboard you operate; it is a growth hire that handles AI search as one part of the job. Every day it asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and reports how often each mentions you, your share of voice, your position and tone, and which pages get cited. Then it does the work: writes and publishes pages that answer the questions you are losing, submits you to the free directories and review sites those answers quote, and writes your engineer a fix list for crawl rules, schema and llms.txt. Because the same brain runs your outreach and paid ads, a page that starts winning citations can become an ad angle or an email the following week. You approve every page before it publishes. You can try the first step with our AI visibility checker.

Best for: founders and small teams with nobody writing pages, who want the number to move rather than be reported.

Pricing: From $99 a month, and it starts with a free trial. Ad spend, if you run ads, is billed by the ad platforms.

The honest limit: its measurement is lighter than the specialist tools below. It tracks about 30 questions per business, queries engines through their APIs rather than the consumer apps, and runs the extended engines weekly on the self-serve plan. It cannot edit what an assistant says; it publishes accurate pages and listings and tracks whether the answer changes. Your developer adds its content feed to your site once (there is no WordPress, Webflow or Framer plugin), and nothing publishes without your approval unless you turn on auto-publish.

When not to pick Revnu: if you have a content team publishing weekly and need deep, multi-brand reporting with SSO and per-client workspaces, a dedicated measurement platform will serve you better.

2. Profound

Profound is the most complete platform in the category: up to nine answer engines on Enterprise, citations, sentiment, prompt volume research, AI crawler analytics and ChatGPT Shopping tracking. It has added an AI Marketer that researches and drafts work, and agents a team can build and reuse. Our Profound comparison goes deeper.

Best for: enterprise brand, SEO and content teams with a procurement process.

Pricing: a free seven-day trial on 50 preset prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews; Enterprise is quoted on request (pricing page, October 2026).

The honest limit: for brands, there is no priced plan between the free trial and an Enterprise quote.

3. Peec AI

Peec is the strongest self-serve tracker. It runs your prompts daily, reports visibility, position, sentiment and share of voice, and has excellent source analytics that classify cited domains by type. It adds brand perception scoring, AI referral tracking through Google Analytics, a crawlability audit, and an MCP server. Its research team publishes useful work on how AI search retrieves sources.

Best for: in-house SEO managers and agencies who want a capable tracker on a card.

Pricing: Starter €85 a month (50 prompts, three models), Pro €205, Advanced €425, Enterprise custom, with a free trial (pricing page, October 2026).

The honest limit: self-serve plans track three models from ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI; Claude and Perplexity are on Enterprise. It recommends; your team writes.

4. OtterlyAI

OtterlyAI is the budget pick. It tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot on every plan, reports mentions, position, sentiment and link citations, and includes a GEO audit that scores pages before you publish. It was named a Gartner Cool Vendor for AI in Marketing in 2025.

Best for: solo marketers and small teams starting out.

Pricing: Lite $29 a month (15 prompts), Standard $189 (100 prompts), Premium $489 (400 prompts), Enterprise custom, with a free trial (pricing page, October 2026).

The honest limit: Gemini, AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons, and 15 prompts is a small sample.

5. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush adds AI answers to the SEO suite many teams already use: daily prompt tracking, mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, competitor comparison, prompt research, and AI-readiness checks in Site Audit.

Best for: existing Semrush customers.

Pricing: 99 dollars a month per domain with 25 prompts; 50 more prompts are $60 a month; no free trial on the toolkit (Semrush knowledge base, October 2026).

The honest limit: 25 prompts is small, each extra domain or user costs another 99 dollars, and Claude is not in the base toolkit.

6. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Brand Radar combines custom prompt tracking with an AI Visibility Index, a pre-built database of hundreds of millions of prompts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. You can look up any brand without setup, which is ideal for competitor and market research. It also tracks YouTube and Reddit mentions.

Best for: Ahrefs users and anyone sizing a market before choosing prompts.

Pricing: every paid Ahrefs plan includes a few custom prompts (five on Lite); larger prompt packages started at €47 a month and the AI Visibility Index at €179 a month when we checked, shown in euros (Brand Radar page, October 2026).

The honest limit: metered by checks, so budgeting takes arithmetic, and it measures rather than acts.

7. Scrunch

Scrunch monitors ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and Meta, with persona, topic and region views. Its Agent Experience Platform serves AI crawlers a lightweight, machine-readable version of your site while people see the normal one.

Best for: mid-size and larger marketing teams and agencies.

Pricing: Starter $300 month to month or $250 a month billed annually (350 custom prompts), Growth $500 or $417 annually, Enterprise custom, with a seven-day free trial and no card (pricing page, October 2026).

The honest limit: it starts at several hundred dollars a month, and the bot-facing site is a decision for your engineers. The writing stays with you.

8. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ tracks up to 11 engines on paid plans, including Claude, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI, ties visibility to Google Analytics and Search Console, and adds a content optimization agent with on-page and off-page action lists.

Best for: teams that want the widest engine coverage, starting free.

Pricing: free Essential tier with $25 of credit across five engines; Starter $295 a month with 3,600 credits and 11 engines; Enterprise custom (pricing page, October 2026).

The honest limit: one credit is one AI response, so broad tracking burns credits fast, and Starter covers one language and region.

Side-by-side

Tool Best for Starting price Who runs it
Revnu Founders with no one writing pages From $99 a month, free trial Revnu does the work; you approve it
Profound Enterprise brand teams Free trial, then quoted on request Your brand team, with agent help
Peec AI SEO managers and agencies, self-serve €85 a month Your SEO or content team
OtterlyAI Small teams on a budget $29 a month You or a marketer
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit Existing Semrush customers 99 dollars a month per domain Your SEO team
Ahrefs Brand Radar Ahrefs users and market research Included in small amounts on paid Ahrefs plans Your SEO team
Scrunch Mid-size and larger teams $250 a month billed annually Your marketing team and engineers
AthenaHQ Widest engine coverage, start free Free, then $295 a month Your marketing team

Where this leaves you

Start by asking the assistants yourself. Ten questions your buyer would ask, in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, will tell you in an afternoon whether you are in the answer set at all and which pages are quoted instead of yours. Before you budget, it is also worth reading whether AI search brings customers for a business like yours.

Then pick by who will act on the data. If you have writers or an agency, buy the meter that fits your engines and budget: Peec or OtterlyAI for self-serve, Semrush or Ahrefs if you already pay for them, Scrunch or AthenaHQ for wider coverage, Profound if you are an enterprise. If nobody is going to write the pages, a tracker will show you an accurate number that does not move. That is the case Revnu is built for: it checks the answers, writes and publishes the pages, often as a programmatic set of pages answering many questions at once, claims the listings, and asks for your approval on each. And if you are about to add a fourth tool that sees one channel, read why point tools leave you as the integration layer first.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI visibility tool?

An AI visibility tool asks AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews a set of questions your buyers might ask, on a schedule, and records whether your brand was mentioned, where it appeared, how it was described, and which web pages the answer cited. Repeated daily and compared with competitors, that becomes a trend line and a share of voice. The same category is also sold as AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) software.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

In practice, very little. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) both mean getting your brand mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers, and most vendors use the terms interchangeably alongside 'AI visibility' and 'AI search optimization'. The work is the same either way: publish pages that answer buyer questions directly, get listed on the sources the answers quote, and make your site easy for AI crawlers to read.

What is the best free AI visibility tool?

AthenaHQ has a free tier with $25 of credit across five engines, and Profound offers a free seven-day trial on 50 preset prompts (pricing pages, October 2026). Peec AI, OtterlyAI and Scrunch offer free trials on paid plans. The cheapest option of all is to ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the ten questions your buyer would ask and write down who gets named and which pages are cited, which answers the first question most companies have.

Do AI visibility tools actually improve your rankings in ChatGPT?

Mostly no; they measure and recommend, and someone still has to do the work. The answer changes when pages that answer the question exist, when you appear on the listicles, review sites and forum threads the models cite, and when your own pages describe you accurately. Some tools now help with drafting or optimization, and a few, such as Revnu, write and publish the pages themselves with your approval.
