# How Do I Pick the Right Prompts to Track?

> How to choose the buyer questions Revnu tracks across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Covers prompts versus keywords, intent, topics, where to find real buyer wording, how many prompts to track, what to avoid and how to add, edit and review them.

The prompts you track decide what your AI visibility numbers mean. Track the questions real buyers ask before they've heard of you, and your score tells you whether AI engines recommend you to new customers. Revnu proposes those questions for you, and you can add, edit or remove any of them on **Visibility > Tracked Prompts**.

## Prompts are not keywords

A keyword is a few words typed into Google: "invoicing software". A prompt is the question a buyer asks an AI assistant, and it usually carries who they are and what they need: "invoicing tool for freelancers in the UK".

That extra context changes the answer. An engine recommends different products to a freelancer than to a finance team. So a good prompt names the buyer, the job or the constraint that matters to your business.

Keep it short, the way people actually type: four to nine words, no brand name.

| Weak prompt | Better prompt | Why |
|---|---|---|
| invoicing software | invoicing tool for freelancers | Names the buyer |
| What is the best and most affordable invoicing software for small creative agencies with international clients? | invoicing for agencies with international clients | Nobody types the long version |
| Acme invoicing review | best invoicing tool for freelancers | Branded prompts don't show whether new buyers find you |
| invoicing | invoicing app that handles VAT | Specific enough to have a clear set of answers |

## Track buying questions first

Questions fall into three kinds:

- **Comparing options.** "best CRM for dental clinics", "alternatives to spreadsheets for inventory". The answer lists products. This is where being named wins customers, so most of your prompts belong here.
- **Ready to act.** "inventory software with a free trial", "invoicing app that integrates with Xero". The buyer is close to choosing.
- **Learning.** "how do I track inventory across two shops". Answers often explain rather than name products. Track a few if your buyers start here, but don't fill your list with them.

## Group prompts into a few topics

Pick three to five topics that match what you sell and who you sell to, then track several prompts in each. For example, for an invoicing tool:

- Invoicing for freelancers
- Invoicing with VAT and tax
- Invoicing for agencies
- Alternatives to spreadsheets

Revnu groups your prompts into topics and weights every topic equally in your Visibility score, so one topic with many prompts can't swamp the rest. Use the topic filter on **Tracked Prompts** to see each one.

You don't need ten ways of saying the same thing. Questions with the same meaning usually get the same answers. Cover different buyers, needs and constraints instead.

## Where to find the questions your buyers ask

- **Your customers' words.** What did your best customers search for before they found you? Sales calls, demo forms and support tickets are full of the exact phrases.
- **Search Console.** Queries that already bring you visitors, turned into questions. With [Search Console connected](/docs/search-console), Revnu can propose these, tagged **GSC**.
- **Your SEO keywords.** Each target keyword becomes a question a buyer would ask. Revnu tags these **Keyword**.
- **Competitor pages.** The use cases and comparisons your competitors write about are questions buyers ask.
- **Revnu's research.** Revnu researches your market and proposes prompts, tagged **Research**.

Or ask Revnu to do it:

## How many prompts to track

Aim for at least 25. With fewer, one answer swings your score a lot, and the **Improve Visibility** card on **Overview** shows **Track more queries** until you get there. Click **Investigate in Chat** on it and Revnu proposes up to three new questions, each next to the nearest one you already track. Nothing is added until you say so.

More prompts give you a steadier score and more places to find gaps. Add them in batches of related questions rather than all at once.

## Add, edit and remove prompts

### 1. Open Tracked Prompts

Open **Visibility > Tracked Prompts**. Clear any topic filter first.

### 2. Add a prompt

Type the question and click **Add**. Revnu measures it straight away, usually within minutes, on the engines your plan covers.

### 3. Edit or remove one

Click the pencil on a row to change the wording, or the X to stop tracking it.

You can also do it in chat: "track 'invoicing tool for freelancers'", "change the VAT question to 'invoicing app that handles VAT'" or "stop tracking the pricing question".

Click any prompt to open its history: the answers Revnu recorded for it, by engine and date. That's the place to read what an engine actually said.

## Keep your list steady

- **Keep the hard prompts.** A prompt you're missing from is the most useful one on the list. It's where the next customer is. Dropping it raises the score and hides the gap.
- **Edit with care.** New wording is a new question, and Revnu measures it again straight away. Answers to the old wording aren't a fair comparison, so to judge a fix, keep the prompts unchanged and compare the same engines before and after.
- **Review monthly.** Add prompts for new products, markets or buyers. Swap out prompts for things you no longer sell, as [changed what you sell](/docs/changed-what-you-sell) explains.

## Frequently asked questions

### What prompts should I track for AI visibility?

The questions your buyers ask before they know you exist, in their words: short, four to nine words, no brand name, mostly questions that compare options. Group them into three to five topics.

### How many prompts should I track?

At least 25. Fewer makes your score swing on single answers. Revnu shows a **Track more queries** card until you reach that and proposes questions to add.

### Should I track prompts with my brand name in them?

Track non-branded prompts. They show whether engines recommend you to buyers who haven't heard of you. Revnu reads how engines describe your brand in the background and shows it on the **Sentiment** page.

### What's the difference between a prompt and a keyword?

A keyword is a short search term. A prompt is the full question a buyer asks an AI assistant, usually with who they are and what they need. Context changes which products the engine recommends.

### Do I need many versions of the same question?

Questions with the same meaning usually get the same answers. Cover different buyers, needs and constraints instead of rewording one question.

### Can Revnu suggest prompts for me?

Yes. Revnu researches your market and proposes prompts, and with Search Console connected it can turn your real search queries into prompts. Ask "propose buyer questions to track" in chat.

### How quickly is a new prompt measured?

Usually within minutes, on the engines your plan covers. After that it's measured with the others: weekly on Pro, daily on Managed.

### Will changing a prompt mess up my numbers?

New wording is a new question, so Revnu measures it again straight away. Compare like with like: the same prompts and engines over the same window. To judge a fix, leave the prompts unchanged until the next measurement.
